Spring 2012 cleanup accomplished

Spring cleanup day participants from left to right: Nicole Woo, Bobby Barusefski, Gretchen Guffy, George Southworth, Christina ParascandolaOn Saturday, May 5, 2012, MHNA members fanned out from the southeast corner of 14th Street and Florida Avenue, NW, to clear the trash and debris on neighboring sidewalks, streets and treeboxes.  Juan Camilo Barragan [twitter] from the Mayor's office stopped by and documented our efforts. George Southworth kept us fueled with coffee and donuts. Gretchen Guffy's last-minute improvisation saved the day.  Thanks to all who pitched in.

Please join us for the next MHNA meeting on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, from 7:00p.m. until 8:30p.m, at the Greater Washington Sports Alliance, first floor, the Solea building, 2300 14th Street, NW.  The entrance is on the corner of 14th & Florida. We end promptly at 8:30p.m.  Agenda:

  2. Treasurer's report, summer movie series, Pride Parade, June 9, 2012 
  3. Proposed change to MHNA meeting day from the third Tuesday of each month to a day that does not conflict with the ANC 1B's liquor license committee meetings  
  4. Palace 5ive presentation re Go Skateboarding Day, June 21, 2012  
  5. Douglas development request for variance from zoning requirement to construct 15 parking spaces at proposed new 30-unit apartment building at 2221 14th Street, NW  
  6. Group of residents' proposal for 5-year moratorium on new liquor licenses in the 14th & U area
  • Moratorium would cover 1800 ft. radius from 1213 U Street, NW.
  • Would not apply to grocery or take-away retail (e.g. Trader Joe's), only restaurant, tavern and nightclub licenses.
  • Would not reduce number of existing licenses.
  • Would not apply to license applications pending at the time of moratorium enactment.
  • ABC Board may add amendments to exempt certain areas or businesses from the moratorium.
MHNA meetings are open to the public.  You must be a member of MHNA to vote on issues.  To be eligible for membership, you must live or own residential property within MHNA boundaries.  Dues are $20 for the calendar year.  Join online.

MHNA supports LGBT center's bid for space in the Reeves Center

Click on image for pdf fileAt the MHNA meeting on April 17, 2012, members present voted unanimously to support The DC Center for the LGBT Community's bid for ground floor office space in The Reeves Center at 2000 14th Street, NW.  Today MHNA sent a letter of support.
